“Healthy” Cereal Review

July 29, 2020

Favorites, Lifestyle, Wellness

I LOVE cereal – anyone else? When I was younger, I used to eat bowl after bowl, and strangely enough, I even ate it without milk! Maybe it’s because I as lactose intolerant, or maybe it’s just because I’m a little strange, BUT I loved dry bowls of cereal!

Recently I’ve seen so many different companies/brands coming out with “healthier” cereal. Most grain & gluten free, packed with protein and low in sugar. Most also claim to be low carb, but that’s not important – carbs are FUEL!

Standard cereals that we all know in love, I’m talking cinnamon toast crunch, fruity pebbles, frosted flakes, cocoa puffs – they are DELICIOUS! But, I hate to say it, they are also LOADED with sugar. Usually these cereals can pack up to 12g of sugar per serving, and we all know we are eating more than one serving at a time – its cereal!

I’m all about enjoying the foods you love, and I am definitely not one to turn down a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch if that is what I’m craving, but I am also someone who likes to consume foods that serve my body, and don’t overwhelm my body with sugar and spike my blood sugar leading to a crash later in the day.

So, that being said, I thought it would be fun, but also helpful, to do a quick review of some of the healthier cereal brands I’ve been able to try. I am doing a review, comparing and contrasting the following three brands: Three Wishes, Magic Spoon & The Cereal School. These reviews will contain facts about each brand, but will also include some personal opinion on the flavor and texture of each.

So if you’ve made it this far, and are just as interested in & devoted to cereal as I am, let’s get to the reviews:

  • THREE WISHES – This cereal is advertised as a grain free cereal that is completely plant based with 8 G protein and only 3 g sugar. The protein comes from a pea protein source – which is how it is completely plant based. Each flavor is sweetened with organic cane sugar and monkfruit. There are only 6-7 ingredients in each flavor. The texture is super crunchy, and doesn’t get soggy quickly in milk. The flavors are AMAZING (in my opinion) – tastes just like honey nut cheerios or cocoa puffs, but without all the sugar. I am a HUGE fan! Cleanest ingredients of all three. Only one without dairy!

    • Four different flavors:

      • Unsweetened (very basic, would be a good option if you are trying to avoid sweetened items all together or don’t enjoy sweet cereal),

      • Honey (great honey flavor, not overly sweet),

      • Cinnamon (sweet but packs a punch of cinnamon, not overwhelming, a better for your version of cinnamon toast crunch)

      • cocoa (my favorite because I love all things chocolate, sweet, rich, chocolate flavor.)

    • Cost: can buy either 1 box at a time, or a case of 6 boxes (each box has 7 servings); $5 off when you buy 4 boxes or more – This is the best option for me, because this way I can buy one box of a flavor at a time. No bulk buying!

      • 1 pack: $9.99

      • 6 pack: $39.99

  • MAGIC SPOON – This cereal is advertised as gluten and grain free, low carb (9g carb per serving), 0g sugar and a high protein cereal. There are 11g protein per serving that comes from a milk protein blend (milk protein & whey protein combined); Each flavor is sweetened with allulose, monk fruit & sterol glycoside. Other ingredients includes sunflower & avocado oil, but there are no artificial colors or flavors. Here are a few notes on Magic Spoon:

    • Not good for dairy free/vegan consumers

    • Cutest packaging – who doesn’t love unicorns?

    • Flavors include:

      • Frosted – really sweet and yummy, similar to frosted cheerios!

      • Cocoa – my favorite, mostly because I am a sucker for anything chocolate!

      • Blueberry

      • Fruity – the most fun colors!

    • Cost: $39.00 for 1 case (4 boxes); cannot buy per box, only available online

  • THE CEREAL SCHOOL: This cereal is advertised as a keto, low carb, low sugar, high protein cereal. Each flavor variation is gluten and grain free and sweetened with allulose & monkfruit, ingredients include sunflower oil & milk protein isolate. The allulose and milk protein isolate do not react well with my gut, but could vary person to person. This cereal is very high protein, with 16 grams per serving – which is the highest protein content of all three cereals reviewed here. The Cereal School cereals are very crunchy, but will get soggy faster than the other two, texture is not as dense as the other cereals, more light and fluffy.

    • Flavors include:

      • Peanut Butter – my favorite of all, good peanut butter flavor

      • Cocoa – not bad, but could be stronger in chocolate flavor

      • Cinnamon bun – haven’t tried yet

      • Fruity – not my favorite, fruity flavor seems fake

      • Cookies and cream – did not like this flavor at all, didn’t taste like cookies & cream to me

      • Berries – again, berry flavor tasted fake in my opinion

      • Apple pie – haven’t tried yet

    • Cost (sold in bags, not per box; each bag is 1 serving) – can save 25cents/bag if you subscribe

      • 1 flavor (12 bags): $29.99 (one time purchase)

      • 1 flavor (24 bags): $49.99

      • 2 flavors (24 bags): $49.99

      • 4 flavors (48 bags): $89.97

Enjoy!
